CATHY MACKAY

Tell us about yourself.

I have lived in Exeter for 27 years with my husband and three kids: Tara, Megan and Ryan. Both my husband and I grew up north of Boston and fell in love with the community.

I am a health insurance biller for a  speech and language office.

Why are you running for school board?

I want to help out the parents, teachers and students by giving them a candidate that will take the time to listen to there needs. I feel that the communication between the community and the administration needs to be improved.

I want to give back to the community that my kids grew up in.

What are two key areas you feel the school board should improve?

Better communication between the community and the board. A renewed focus on academics, so we can catch up to where we were before the Covid pandemic.

Should you win the election, what are your long term goals?

I want to work to improve the academic integrity of our schools, and make sure spending is done that prioritizes children and teachers.

If we asked someone who was not a fan of yours why you are not the right person to vote for what would they say?

I am direct and to the point. I take my time before making important decisions, by learning all that I can about this issue. When serving on a school board I think that it is important to understand all the viewpoints before making a decision, and one needs to be able to ask tough questions.

How have you prepared for this role?

I was on the PTO for more than 5 years and volunteered for events like Get Fit in May, the Winter Carnivals, Secret Santa and other events that were hosted by the PTO. I was a Sunday School teacher at St. Michaels Church for more than 15 years.
